Harvesting History
The Napa County Historical Society presents Harvesting History, a new exhibition dedicated to the valley’s early agricultural and wine history. During a time of change in agricultural methods and manufacturing, residents of the Napa Valley resisted the widespread effects of urbanization due to an attempt to preserve local traditions and dreams. Instead of polluting the fertile region with excessive railways and machine based manufacturing facilities; the county opened its doors to a multitude of agricultural interests. Indeed, contrary to modern perception today, wine was not considered a fundamental crop during the mid 1800's. This exhibition delves into an era when farming fruit, nuts, cattle and wine supported a young community. Exploring a period that fostered fruit orchards, cattle ranches and nut groves, visitors will learn about the diverse ethnic make-up of the labor force. In addition, be prepared to experience the valley’s dark period of prohibition, phylloxera and floods! Curated by Jennifer Maudru, the exhibition is open Tues-Sat 12-4 p.m. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. director@napahistory.org for more info.

Napa Valley Wine Train Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Once a year the world’s greatest detectives gather at the home of Julius Fox in Napa, but this year for the 10th anniversary they are gathering on the Napa Valley Wine Train. They swap stories, brag of their accomplishments and a few, I’m sorry to say, get drunk, engage in affairs, and behave in a most unseemly manner. Last year, Julius Fox wrote down the best of the members’ stories and had them published. The book, called “The Detectives’ Club,” was an immediate best seller. Under the terms of the contract, any of the eight detectives who are alive at midnight tonight will share in the royalties - $5,000,000. Those who are no longer among the living will receive nothing for their estate.

Napa Valley Wine Train Vintners Lunch - Artesa Vineyards and Winery
Winemaker Mark Beringer showcases the fabulous wines from one of Napa's most exciting wineries. A fifth generation and award-winning winemaker from Napa Valley, Mark is proud to continue a family tradition of making high quality wines in California's premier AVAs. As the great, great grandson of Beringer Winery co-founder, Jacob Beringer, Mark has always aspired to make his contribution to California winemaking. He grew up immersed in the wine industry and knew from a very young age that winemaking was his calling. At Artesa, the belief is wine without food is, well, incomplete. Executive Chef Kelly Macdonald couldn't agree more and he hits the mark with his food pairing expertise. The result is a culinary experience that completes the flavorful Artesa Wines.

Napa Valley Wine Train - Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Visit WineTrain.com or call +1.800.427.4124 for reservations.

Napa Valley Wine Train Vintner's Lunch - Ramian Estate
Winemaker Brian Graham crafts the collective story of his vineyards - one chapter at a time. Formally educated about eonology and wine- making at the University of Bordeaux, Brian also worked and was mentored at Chateau Roquefort. He went on to further his studies at the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust in London, after which time he worked for a boutique winery in Burgundy named Domaine Serrigny - Jean-Pierre & Fils in Savigny-Les- Beaune. These two experiences gave him the foundation for creating balanced, terroir-driven wines. Join Brian on board The Napa Valley Wine Train for a memorable afternoon of delicious wine, paired artfully with Executive Chef Kelly Macdonald's superb cuisine, as you enjoy the fabulous vistas of the Napa Valley glide slowly by. Napa Valley Wine Train - Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Visit WineTrain.com or call +1.800.427.4124 for reservations.

All Jazzed Up: A Swinging Gala – Napa Valley Opera House Annual Fund-Raising Gala
Come all jazzed up for this annual Napa Valley Opera House fund-raising gala. In the shade of majestic oaks and redwoods, a lawn reception and outdoor concert with the legendary Ramsey Lewis Trio will be followed by a gourmet dinner in the historic Carriage House at Charles Krug Winery. Led by David Reynolds, the evening will conclude with a live auction that will offer twenty-five tantalizing travel lots and parties, including twelve days in Turkey, exploring Istanbul and Antalya, and sailing the Turquoise Coast on a private gulet.

Napa Valley Wine Train Vintner's Lunch - Swanson Vineyards
Swanson Vineyards is a family winery founded on a passion for evolving the existing standards of wine and food. In the 1950s, long before founding Swanson Vineyards, the Swanson family introduced the first lifestyle product, Swanson frozen dinners, which helped women get out of the kitchen and enjoy life. In 1985, at his 25th Stanford University reunion, W. Clarke Swanson, Jr. was inspired by a tip from a fraternity brother and successful vintner to purchase a parcel of vineyard land on the Oakville Cross Road in the heart of Napa Valley. Join Swanson's Winemaker Chris Phelps on board The Napa Valley Wine Train for a memorable afternoon of delicious wine, paired artfully with Executive Chef Kelly Macdonald's superb cuisine, as you enjoy the fabulous vistas of the Napa Valley glide slowly by. Grand Traditions Gala
Contact Joan Lockhart, E.D. ParentsCAN Phone 707 253-7444, ext. 100 Parents of the Year chosen for Grand Traditions Gala Parent Child Advocacy Network (ParentsCAN) announces that Shari and Garen Staglin of Staglin Vineyards, Rutherford, Ca. have been named “Parents of the Year, 2010,” and will be honored at this year’s Grand Traditions Gala to be held Friday Oct.1, 2010, at the Silverado Resort in Napa. The Staglins were chosen to be honored in 2010 because they understand the path families walk when a family member has mental illness. In 1990, their son Brandon was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which he described as having “lost half his self” in an instant. AS a result of their family’s traumatic experience, Mr and Mrs Staglin have been supportive over the years of other families who walk a similar path. Through their yearly event, Music for Mental Health the Staglins and Staglin Family Vineyards support mental health with millions of dollars for brain research. ParentsCAN, Napa County nonprofit organization was founded by parents in 2005 to support other parents whose child is diagnosed with life-changing disability and health needs such as mental illness. ParentsCAN exists to provide hope, information, and training to parents of children with significant needs in Napa County. Their support of families assures that families understand the disability issues, negotiate systems and become lifetime advocates for their family’s needs. This year’s annual Grand Traditions Gala, will be a special event, as ParentsCAN celebrates its fifth birthday as well. Executive Chef Peter Pahk of Silverado will orchestrate the gourmet appetizers, and dinner. Wines from several vineyards will be poured, and a short auction and fund-a-need will help fund ongoing ParentsCAN programs. Dance music will be provided by Volkr Strifler and his band. ParentsCAN recently moved their Resource Center to 1909 Jefferson to accommodate the increased numbers they serve. There is a disability library, and advocates are available to meet with individuals who visit, or call. Funding for the education and advocacy done by ParentsCAN is primarily through grants, and donations. ParentsCAN gives presentations to local service groups and prospective donors to find interested supporters. All services are free to families who ask for service. About 500 families are served each year, with peer to peer support and education. More families receive needed information through our newsletter and website. Follow us on Facebook (Parent Child Advocacy Network) and Twitter (parentscan). For more information about ParentsCAN, go to our website
