Liam Mac Cana is not your ordinary wine tour guide.
Like others in the industry, he owns and operates the requisite luxury vehicles (from Towncars to limousines and soon he’ll add a fourteen seat Sprinter van to the fleet.) He’s prompt and personable, and he knows the byways and mountain roads that lead to the valley’s numerous wineries. But Mac Cana’s Elegant Wine Tours entail so much more than transportation. What sets him apart is his wine knowledge and his close relationships with some of the valley’s most esteemed winemakers and tasting room managers. These relationships provide access – access not typically afforded to everyone in the tour business.
Originally from the west coast of Ireland, Mac Cana has lived in the Napa Valley since 2014, and in that time, has created an in- valuable network of contacts that benefit his clients. In addition, he holds an advanced certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), and has spent two decades within the international wine industry, daily honing his wine knowledge. He delivers not only local insights, but a wider comprehension of the wine-making process, the vines, and their history.
Acting essentially as a matchmaker be- tween his clients and wineries, Mac Cana’s tours are curated to each guest, with whom he might collaborate months in advance of a booking in order to obtain the information to create meaningful experiences. He is best known for creating personally curated itineraries that resonate, and in addition to wine tasting, this might include biking, ballooning, kayaking, or running (Mac Can is an avid trail runner) – whatever the client desires. An Elegant Wine Tours sojourn is a holistic experience where guests’ wine knowledge (or lack of), preferences, and interests are of paramount importance in the tour planning. What kind of wines are favored? Are large wineries or small boutique gems preferred? Does a guest want to claim discovery of a largely unknown spot, or perhaps gain bragging rights for gaining access to an exclusive label? Mac Cana has the knowledge and the connections to make it happen.
“We love working with Liam!” said Julie Johnson, proprietor and winemaker at St. Helena’s Tres Sabores winery. “We are very small at Tres Sabores, and Liam knows our winery and style extremely well and is able to bring visitors that are pre- pared for our particular experience. He’s a true Napa Valley concierge, taking his customers’ preferences to heart and customizing for them the perfect day. They leave us, and him, feeling happy and well informed.”
“I want each of my guests to take away something more than a bottle of wine,” said Mac Cana. “My hope is that they take away an increased passion for the world of wine and most importantly, extraordinary memories!”
